The transponder is not a minor cockpit detail. It is a critical element for surveillance, ATC coordination, and emergency response. That is why the correct use of codes 7500, 7600, 7700 — and, in some European operations, 7601 — requires strict discipline and full understanding of applicable procedures.

The key point is this: an incorrectly selected code can lead ATC to misinterpret the situation, trigger unnecessary alerts, and even initiate unwarranted security or airspace protection measures. In real-world operations, this is not a minor issue — it can increase workload and create confusion at an already critical moment.

Regarding 7601, it is associated with operational practices derived from European provisions under SERA.14083 (Radio Communication Failure Procedures), applicable from May 1, 2025. In practical terms, it aims to differentiate specific IFR communication failure scenarios, particularly when the aircraft is in VMC and elects to divert and land at the nearest suitable aerodrome, rather than continuing in accordance with the last clearance received.

There is no room for improvisation when it comes to the transponder. Knowing when to use 7600, 7601 or 7700 is an essential part of situational awareness and operational discipline that protect the aircraft, the crew and the ATC system.
