The MetOp Second Generation (MetOp-SG) program represents a technological leap in operational meteorology, consolidating Europe’s leadership in space-based atmospheric and climate monitoring. Developed by Airbus Defence and Space under the supervision of the European Space Agency (ESA) in cooperation with EUMETSAT, this mission will deliver critical environmental measurements for aviation, meteorology, and climate analysis through mid-2040s.

Program Highlights

  • MetOp-SG consists of six polar-orbiting satellites, arranged in three pairs (A and B units), with launches commencing in 2025 aboard Ariane 6. This constellation ensures continuous, global atmospheric coverage.

  • “A” satellites are focused on hyperspectral sounding and high-resolution visible/infrared imaging; “B” satellites provide advanced microwave sounding and scatterometer/radar capabilities, dramatically improving atmospheric profile retrievals.

  • Key onboard payloads include the METimage multispectral imager, IASI-NG infrared atmospheric sounder, pioneering cloud/aerosol microphysics sensors, and the Sentinel-5 spectrometer, critical for global monitoring of trace gases and air quality.

  • Sensor suite output encompasses profiles of temperature, humidity, wind (including ocean surface winds), atmospheric composition, cloud type and coverage, precipitation, solar radiation, surface parameters (albedo, temperature, moisture), polar ice, and atmospheric aerosols, offering greater resolution and accuracy than the previous generation.

Operational Impact

  • MetOp-SG enables enhanced numerical weather prediction, real-time severe weather alerts, and long-range climatological studies — all vital for flight planning, aviation risk mitigation, and global air traffic management.

  • This major European project unites the expertise of ESA, EUMETSAT (operations and data dissemination), the German (DLR) and French (CNES) space agencies, and the European Union Copernicus Program.

The use of MetOp-SG represents a fundamental breakthrough for European and global aviation, raising the standard of operational safety and flight efficiency across all continents. With ultra-high precision sensors, the system provides near real-time meteorological data on winds, temperature, upper-air turbulence, cloud layers, precipitation, ice, air quality, and extreme phenomena — dramatically expanding the forecasting horizon and risk analysis for route planning, airport operations, and in-flight contingency support.

In practice, the information processed by MetOp-SG feeds the numerical forecast models utilized by leading meteorological centers — including ECMWF— as well as national weather agencies and aviation service providers (EUMETSAT, ESA, Copernicus). Rapid access to global, up-to-date data empowers strategic decision-making for flight crews, air traffic control centers, operators, and insurers, helping reduce delays, optimize fuel usage, mitigate climatic risks, and lessen both environmental and operational impacts.

Thus, MetOp-SG consolidates reaffirms the commitment to safer, more resilient, and efficient global aviation, in partnership with international organizations.

Safe flights!
